HOW TO SELL

Sell Your Pickups

Selling used guitar pickups is simple if you follow proven steps. Most listings fail because sellers provide bad photos, missing information, or vague descriptions. This page shows you exactly how to list, price, and ship pickups in a way that attracts serious buyers and avoids problems.

Trades – Great if you want another set

Trades can be useful, especially if you are looking to buy a specific piece of gear from a retailer that accepts trades. Visit our trade page for more info

Safe trades require:

  • Equal or greater value
  • Clear photos from both sides
  • Confirming lead length
  • Confirming warranty status
  • Agreement on shipping order
  • Proof of testing before exchange

Most players don’t know how to trade safely, so we keep a dedicated breakdown on the Trade Page.

  • How to verify authenticity
  • How to structure a fair trade
  • When to decline
  • How to avoid unreliable traders
  • Why trades are riskier than sales

Know Your Pickup Before You List It

You don’t need to know alnico types, DC readings, or technical specs, none of that determines sale value. You can pull the description of the pickup from the manufacturers website and include in your listing.

You do need to know:

  • The brand and model
  • Whether you bought it new or used
  • Whether the warranty transfers
  • Lead length (very important)
  • Whether the pickup was tested recently
  • Any repairs, potting, or tampering

Buyers want honesty and clarity, not speculation.

If you’re unsure about a detail:
Contact the builder. They will tell you exactly what you have.

Pricing Your Pickup

Value is determined by:

  • Brand reputation
  • Warranty status
  • Lead length
  • Condition
  • Rarity
  • Market demand

General rule:

  • In-warranty boutique sets sell for a premium
  • Out-of-warranty = discount
  • Discontinued boutique = high value but slower to sell
  • Mass-produced pickups = low value

If your set is from a retired or deceased winder, you may be able to sell for a premium.

Photos That Build Trust

Bad photos kill 50% of used pickup listings.

Here is what buyers want to see:

  • Original Packaging
  • Full lead length stretched out
  • Any signs of wear
  • Full set shown together (if selling as a set)

Avoid:

  • Blurry photos
  • Shadows
  • Flash reflections
  • Cropped or incomplete angles

Buyers should be able to see everything, with no guesswork.

Write a Simple, Honest Description

Your description should include:

  • Brand + model
  • Whether you were the original owner
  • Lead length
  • Any repairs
  • Confirmation that the pickup was tested in a guitar
  • Whether the warranty transfers

Testing Before You Sell

Never list a pickup as “working” if you haven’t tested.

Multimeters tests are good but playing the pickup in a guitar is best to confirm:

  • No squealing
  • No hum issues
  • No intermittent dropouts

If you cannot test it, list it as “untested, priced accordingly.”

Honesty avoids problems.

Shipping Safely

Pickups are fragile. A bad shipping job turns a working pickup into a refund.

Use:

  • A small box
  • Bubble wrap
  • Foam or paper fill
  • Proper cable protection
  • A rigid outer layer so the pickup can’t be crushed

Do not ship in envelopes, ever.

When in doubt, copy what professional sellers do:

  • Small inner box
  • Rigid outer box
  • Wrap each pickup separately
  • Leads protected and secured

Shipping mistakes cost more than proper packing.

Where to Sell

Your safest selling options, in order:

  1. eBay – Best buyer protection, best visibility, safest overall. Auctions or fixed price.
  2. Reverb – Good for boutique brands. Fixed Price
  3. Local shops – Lower payout but simple
  4. Direct sale – Only if buyer is reputable
  5. Forums – Worst option, basically Craigslist type transaction, high risk, no buyer safety

Forums should always be your last choice.
Too many anonymous buyers.
Too many disputes.

Serious players rarely buy or sell on or listen opinions on guitar forums.

Returns & Buyer Expectations

If you offer returns:

  • State the terms clearly
  • Require buyers to cover return shipping
  • Inspect pickups immediately when returned

If you do not offer returns:

  • Be detailed and honest in your listing
  • Provide clear photos
  • Document testing before shipment

Transparent listings avoid disputes.

Final Advice

Selling pickups is easy if you follow these priorities:

  • Accurate photos
  • Clear descriptions
  • Confirmed testing
  • Honest pricing
  • Safe shipping
  • Avoiding forums
  • Understanding warranty value

Do that, and your pickups will sell smoothly with no drama.
